Combat Action Badge Orders Moving

Quick update on what I've been doing lately. Got back to China about a week ago. Classes are over; I missed the last few weeks of class (including exams). It doesn't really matter for anything. But anyway I have no class for the next two months or so. This month I'm working double time, which is to say four half-days a week instead of two (plus the magazine job).

But lately I've been most consumed with two things: (1) Trying to get a visa arranged for next year, and (2) Finding a place to live and moving.

My tentative plan is to stay in Hainan for one more year, not more or less, and after that to probably go somewhere else -- that will probably but not definitely be somewhere else in China -- and even if it's not, it will probably not be somewhere in the USA. That's my tentative plan.

So staying here for one more year requires, as I said (1) renewing my student visa for another year. That's a complicated process that I just started after I got back from traveling. Basically I need to be enrolled in school, and have a place to live, and maybe some other things (?) in order to get the visa. Enrolling in school for next semester is itself a multi-step process, naturally, and then certifying my residence and whatever else has turned out to be rather complicated too. Just lost of paperwork, going to different places, waiting. I need a residence certification from the police. In order to get that, I need a letter (with official seal) from my place of residence stating that I live there, and a copy of the landlord's ID, plus my passport (original and a copy), as well as a passport-style photo (they use those for tons of stuff here). Of course, getting the copy of the landlord's ID took a day or two for him to be free, then I had to go to the building management for the letter, and then take all the documents to the police station. (I did that today.) Then when I get that residence certification back (hopefully tomorrow) I have to take that to the school, register for classes (and pay tuition) etc. and who knows what else, then they will give me the documentation that I am enrolled for next semester, and I probably have to take that to some consular office or something to do the visa, along with who knows what other documentation.

(2) Also, I'm moving. Found a place just off campus, and have beeNo cleaning it out for the last three days. It's pretty nice; Bigger Than the dorm room - But The number of cockroaches has-been, shall we say, Slightly off-putting. (I think I can say I've seen Safely at least 50-60 living ones.) Hopefully That Will not Be an Ongoing problem, Now That the genocide is complete, or Nearly so. I'm slowly moving stuff Into the new place, I Have to Be out of the bed by the 25th. BUYING Also Been Some furniture; Still Have a little left to buy. It's Already furnished, But There Was no desk or shelving, so Are Those important enough to go ahead and buy (or cheap second-hand ones). Also Got Some new curtains. The place has a TV Though, so That Will Be Different, I Have not Had a TV at home (not counting "When I Lived at home, when i was entre countries) Since k Whonows when. There's Also a real fridge, with a real freezer, Which has Already been really nice. The little mini-fridge thing i have now (and Probably will try to sell) is very small, and Does not really do a great job. There's supposed to Be a freezer part at the top, But It Does Exactly work like it's supposed to. The one thing There is not, Though, is a washing machine. BUYING'm looking at one - it looks like I can get a small, used one for less Than 400 RMB (= 60 USD). Other options Either Would Be to carry my laundry to school and back and do it there, or to Become Fully Chinese and handwash my clothes. Still undecided on this issue.

Master Geographic Letter Real Estates Malaysia

In total, we visited three places in Malaysia, Not Merely counting Those we pass through (or over) or in Which we only saw the bus terminal. Those three places - Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Melaka - Are Probably the top three tourist destinations in the country (at least, That's What the Existence of Our Lonely Planet book dedicated Exclusively to Those Three Would Indicate).



Some I've Already Written about the country in recent posts, but here are my pictures, and the rest of my description, from Our trip There.



As I've Mentioned, this WAS trip occasioned by my mom (Pictured Above, in Penang) Having a conference in Singapore, prompting me to go there to visit her, and then us to travel arond together after that for a week.



Penang, where these first pictures are from, is an island. I've already written one post about it, last week or so. One side trip that we took from the city (which is actually called George Town) was to a beach (nick?)named \he beach necessitated a bus ride and then a boat ride (and then the reverse to get back), but we opted for that rather than the expensive package tour, with included seafood barbecue and stuff, that we were offered. And as it turned out, the regular city bus was quite nice, if a little too air conditioned (as I've noticed many places and vehicles being, all through our travels in the region -- but in some ways that's better than not air conditioned enough, especially when you're talking about buses and the like).



So the pictures above are all from Penang; the pictures below are all from Melaka (also spelled Malacca). I'm not posting any pictures from Kuala Lumpur because I didn't really take any that I think are worth posting. But if you really want to, you can Google \



In Malaysia, it seemed like every city had a \t Be Developed as places as in the U.S. or Europe, after the Other Places I've Lived and Been, Malaysia Did not seem exceptional one way or the Other On That scale. Overall, the trip was very satisfying. We Did not have any real Problems with leeches or mosquitoes or bedbugs. If you get a chance to go, I'd recommend it.

We're back in Malaysia now, after spending a few days in North Sumatra, Indonesia. From Penang (Malaysia) we flew into the airport in Medan, which is the capital city of the Indonesian province of North Sumatra (which, as you may have guessed, comprises the northern part of the island of Sumatra). From there we traveled overland to a village called Bukit Lawang. It's a small town that is situated on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park, and supports itself through tourism.



Tourists go to Bukit Lawang (\there too, the orangutans, but as it turned out, the village itself was interesting too.



Below: a table selling durians, the \Osur to Indonesian food goes, it wasn't very hard to find vegetarian stuff. There Was a lot of tofu and tempeh dishes, Among Other Things. But everything was incredibly spicy! On our way out of the country (flying from Medan to Kuala Lumpur) Our flight WAS delayed three hours (it Was Only a one-hour flight, and It Was Already Going To Be a midnight arrival, so the WAS MOST unwelcome delay, we Got Into Our hotel in KL around 4:30 am). Anyway, since it's so late and the WAS Entire Seem To Be airport shut down and the Passengers Were Already on the Other Side of security and we where so long delayed, the airport (or the airline) Actually Provided everyone with free food, a whole boxed meal. And like I Said, It Was Mostly vegetarian, But Was It ever man spicy, WAS Which Consistent with my previous experience with Indonesian food, But It Was That this meal Surprising That They Gave everybody - Grandmothers and grandbabies alike - Was That Hot. I guess that's just the way everybody eats it There. (Picture Below another one from Bukit Lawang ... unrelated to food.)



So anyway, like I Said, people go to BL to see the orangutans and monkeys and stuff, and we did see Them. We Saw Them On Our Official Guide Through the rainforest hike, But We Also Saw Them When We just walk around on our own, Both in the forest and in the village. One morning, Some Were Even monkeys clambering all over and around Our guesthouse (first picture below).



On our hike we saw, I think, four or five Different kinds of primates. At least a couple Different species of monkeys. Gibbons. Humans ...* The one in the picture Below street is Thomas leaf monkey. As you can see, at times We Were Able to get pretty close to Them.



But of course the MOST spectacular Were the orangutans. Orangutans Are Pretty easy to see There Because (aside from this nature reserve Being One of the Few places in the world Where the animals exist) There is a nearby rehabilitation center That does work formerly Trying to release captive animals back Into the Wild, and There That is a feeding station dog Tourists visit and stuff, where, the park rangers or whoever Provide bananas to the orangutans Twice a day. We Went and saw That too, but I'm not even going to post pictures from that, because that's kind of like a cop out, right? The first picture below is one that we saw on our trek through the jungle.



The final picture is of an orangutan I saw when I was just out walking by myself, and heard some great crashing in the trees, and looked up, and there were a pair of them up there swinging around.



*obviously that's kind of a joke, but seriously, seeing these orangutans, they are physically so similar to us; you understand how they could be called \uld deny That is just silly.
